Scripture Reading For Today – Gen 13:14-17

False Loyalty to Man

In yesterday’s devotional, we read about how Abraham delayed in responding to the call of God to him to leave Ur of the Chaldees and go to Canaan.
As we continue our theme on disobedience, we see in the scripture that we read yesterday, another act of disobedience that Abraham committed that you may have overlooked.
God had said to Abraham as recorded in Genesis 12:1:

“Now the LORD said to Abram,
“Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you.””

Let’s Look Again At Abraham’s Response to God’s Call:

First Disobedience – Gen 11:31

31Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (the son of Haran), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and with them he set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. When they came to Haran, they settled there.

Abraham abdicated his call to another man to take charge of his destiny. God did not call Terah; God called Abraham.

Abraham took his father, the household, and the family idols with him. The very things that God was trying to separate him from. They left to go from Ur to Canaan, but they got to Haran and dwelt there.

Partial obedience will always lead to partial or even aborted fulfilment of your destiny.

 The bible says categorically:

God Called Abraham Alone!

“Look to Abraham your father, And to Sarah who bore you; For I called him alone, And blessed him and increased him.”” Isaiah 51:2 NKJV

Second Disobedience – Gen 12:4-5

After the death of Terah, Abraham had the opportunity to correct his earlier mistake,
but see what he did again:

“So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.” Genesis 12:4-5 NKJV

Abraham partially obeyed God’s instructions to leave everyone behind as he left Ur; again, when he left Haran, he still took everyone with him!

There are some that are wandering right now in an “in between” land; some distance away from where you are coming from, but still too far away from where
He has promised you and where you originally set out for.

Consider your ways; are you walking and living in full obedience to His will for your life? Is your disobedience preventing you from going farther?

Abraham’s destiny was also delayed because he chose to go with the wrong people.

Please note that when you are answering the call of destiny and walking in obedience to the demands of God’s purpose for your life, the “wrong people”
may not necessarily be bad people – they are just the wrong people for your destiny and they are bad for the fulfilment of your purpose.

When you walk in disobedience with the wrong people, they will delay the fulfilment of your destiny by making you stop at the wrong place.

You may get the praise and accolades of man, you may get the recognition and acknowledgement of friends and family, you may receive honour and may even
find a measure of “fulfilment”and apparent prosperity as a consequence of your actions; but after all has been said and done, none of that matters
for anything with God, if you did it in disobedience to His word.

What is it that God has asked you to do, or maybe asked you to stop doing, that you are in disobedience to Him?

  • Abraham was stuck in Haran until his father died.
  • God did not show him the fullness and extent of His inheritance until lot was separated from him:

14After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, “Look from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west. 15I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever. 16And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted. 17Get up and walk throughout the land, for I will give it to you.” Gen 13:14-17 NET

Are you holding on to things, relationships, people or places that God is trying to separate you from in order to secure His call on your life?

Do not delay in correcting the mistakes you may have made in the past; do not hold on to lot in disobedience to God’s instructions to you.

Partial Obedience will lead to a partial fulfilment of God’s plans for your life, and an incomplete vision for your purpose.

Is there a Lot in your life that need to think about?
