Today’s Scripture Reading: John 2:1-11
The bible does not record too many words that were credited to Mary the mother of Jesus, that she said concerning her son. However, in my opinion, I think one of the most profound things that she uttered in respect of her son Jesus was her statement recorded in John 2:5.
This seemingly innocuous statement holds the key to unlock so many blessings that a believer will ever walk in.
“His mother told the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”
As easy as that may sound; as simple an instruction as that may be on the surface, that instruction is actually a lot harder to obey than one would first imagine.
Let’s look at this in the context of our scripture for today, paying particular attention to verses 6-8.
“6Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus told the servants, “Fill the water jars with water.” So they filled them up to the very top. 8Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the head steward,” and they did.”
They did as they were instructed by Jesus, and the need that was pressing was met by a miracle.
But first, they had to obey his instructions:
The Vessels that Were Used (Verse 7): Ordinary, common everyday vessels that were used for washing were to be filled with water.
The Instructions They Had To Obey (Verse 8): “Draw some out and take it to the governor of the feast.”
They had to trust Jesus that in their obedience, He would honour His word and do His part to perform the miracle. But they wouldn’t know this, till they had first presented the cup to the governor of the feast.
Obedience is the key to the miracle that you are believing God for.
Just like those servants at the feast, your obedience will often mean that you have to just take Him at His word, with nothing else to hold on to. You may look at the vessel that He is asking you to use and wonder if He meant what He said.
You may have to draw water out of that unlikely vessel and at His word, trusting Him, present it to meet the need. You may have to do this without any assurance in the natural, with nothing to hold on to, except that He has given His word.
Whatever He says to you to do, just do it.
There is a miracle on the other side of your obedience!
